TVDE course: prices, duration and what comes after
Published 17 August 2026 · Ler em português
Before the first paid trip there is a mandatory course: the TVDE driver training, given only by IMT-recognised providers. This guide gathers what the training centres publish about prices and duration, and adds the part nobody mentions in the brochure: what happens after you pass.
How much it costs, in real numbers
| What | Typical price (2026) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Initial course (50 hours) | €160–250 | frequent promotions for early enrolment |
| Final exam | €30–50 | some centres charge it separately; always ask |
| Certificate renewal (8 hours) | varies | shorter course, proportional price |

How long it takes
The initial course is 50 hours, usually spread over one to three weeks depending on the pace (intensive, after-hours or weekends). Many centres offer mostly online formats. The certificate renewal is much lighter: 8 hours.
How to choose the centre
- Total price, not window price. Add the exam, if charged separately, and any resits.
- Format. Online at your own pace or in person with fixed dates, depending on how you learn best.
- IMT recognition. Only recognised providers count. We have the complete list, searchable by city; the official one lives in a PDF.
- Proximity or dates. A centre near you, or an online one starting now. Whichever saves you more idle weeks.
The part no school teaches: after the exam
The certificate opens the door, but between the exam and the first payment there are four tax steps that are on you:
- Choosing how you'll work: fleet, your own operator or an employment contract;
- Opening activity at the tax office: CAE 49320, ten minutes online;
- Issuing green receipts to the fleet: on time, with the right NIF;
- Getting into the Social Security rhythm, and using the first-year exemption, if it's your case.
It's all explained, for free, in the free accounting course for TVDE drivers: five lessons in plain language, the tax complement to the course you're about to take.
